About the artist:
Sterling Edwards is an internationally renowned artist, author, and teacher. His original paintings are in private collections worldwide and he is represented by several galleries in the U.S. and Canada. Sterling is the author of the North Light book, "Creating Luminous Watercolor Landscapes, a Four Step Process" which is sold internationally along with his signature watercolor brushes, watercolor palette, and DVD's. He has been awarded signature membership status in the revered Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour and the esteemed Transparent Watercolor Society of America. Throughout his successful career as an artist he has taken thousands of photographs to be used as reference and inspiration for his paintings. Next to painting, photography has long been his second passion. He is often contracted to teach art workshops at inspiring locations across the U.S. and Canada. This enables Sterling to explore different parts of the country looking for visual reference material for his paintings and his fine art photography. All of the photographs on this site were taken by Sterling over a period of several years. They are from his private collection and considered to be some of his finest photographs.
As an artist, Sterling has developed a keen eye for design and composition. It is not simply a matter of photographing a "pretty" scene or object. Utilizing all of the skills that he has learned over the years as a visual artist, he looks for patterns of light and dark, a strong focal point, interesting and varied textures, and directional movement. The most important element in his photography is the design of the subject and how it interacts with it's surroundings. The image must make a statement and possess all of the above attributes to be considered as a fine art giclee by Sterling. Fewer than 10% of Sterling's photographs are considered candidates for a fine art reproduction. Of those, maybe 25% make the final grade.
Once an image is selected for reproduction Sterling creates a high quality digital print using a state of the art giclee printer. For a more information and a description of a "giclee" refer to the menu section titled "Giclees and Galleries". The resulting giclee is a striking image on museum quality archival cotton rag fine art paper. Black white photographs produced using the latest ink jet giclee process are typically referred to as "pigment on paper".
